Originally built in 1847 to house the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company, the brick buildings now known as Dixon Mills have been transformed from an industrial complex to an upscale residential community. With its twin 150-foot high smokestacks, large arched windows and terra cotta facades, the complex is a reminder of the town’s rich history. But even more importantly, it is a symbol of architectural transformation.
When the Dixon Mills Jersey City in 1986 to be converted into apartments, the owners were required to preserve some of the buildings’ historic features in order to receive government subsidies for converting them into condos. As a result, the buildings’ historic signs, brickwork and upper level walkways were preserved and became an important selling point when it was converted to luxury living.
